Ultra’s X-Connect psu has got to be one of the best modular psu’s I’ve seen yet.

If you haven’t heard of Ultra Products, your not the only one. I did not hear about them till this past August at Massivelan 2004
when we got a sneak peak at one of these bad boys before their September release. Aside from psu’s, Ultra also makes plenty of other
little toys to mod out your pc. From cables, cases, lighting, surge protectors, cpu cooling, mp3 players, they have a little bit of
everything.

The Package

The box the X-Connect comes in is almost twice the size of a normal psu box. Inside the box is the psu, another box with the
cables, and surprise, a manual.

The Look

The first thing you’ll notice about the X-Connect is the look. The high-gloss finish screams, “put me in a windowed case.” The modular plugs on the psu are finished off beautifully, especially if compared to other modular psu’s. One thing I found odd about the X-Connect is the ATX connector is modular too. I don’t know too many people that’ll be using this psu minus a motherboard. It also comes with covers to use on the unused plugs. Two clear 80mm fans and a polished Ultra labeled grill on the top fan round out the look of the X-Connect.
The cables are something amazing looking too. Sleeved in silver and then covered in a clear, flexible,  plastic tubing. From surfing the Ultra forums, I found out that the first incarnations of these cables were a bit stiff which made them harder to bend around inside a case. Ultra as since alleviated this problem and the psu’s shipping now are much better. Only the ATX connector is a little bit problem some if you needed to twist it around any, but no real problem getting it connected. Both ends of the cables are the same so there’s no questioning which end plugs into the psu.
Speaking of the ends, these were the most noticeable part of the psu to me. Both ends are Molex and have custom boots covering the Molex and wire ends with an Ultra logo branded on the boots. With the custom boots and sleeving, you don’t see any of those ugly red, yellow, and black wires, providing a very clean finish. This is better than any sleeving job I’ve ever seen so kudos to Ultra on this.

 Nice comparison between the
 X-Connect cables and standard
 power cables.
Cable length was very suitable and I believe someone with a full tower wouldn’t have a problem connecting power to devices at the bottom of the case.
All the cables are also UV reactive, which adds another nice touch if your using UV lighting.
